Three Oaks Shelter

The Church of the Ascension was instrumental in building this homeless shelter for men.  The Three Oaks' new program for Food Service Classes are proceeding very well.  The class enables the participants to cook meals for themselves.  Their goal is to cook three meals a day under supervised training.  As they are preparing the food themselves they need only items like ham, chicken, hamburger, turkey etc.  Prepared foods, salads and desserts are no longer required. Our aim is to have enough meat for 20 people.  We assist with food the second and fourth Mondays of each month. There is a sign up sheet in the family room or you can contact Margaret Jarboe via the church office at 301-863-8551 for more information.

The shelter is located at 46905 Lei Drive, Lexington Park, near the library.  If you would like to participate in this ministry, please call Margaret Jarboe via the church office at 301-863-8551, or simply sign the chart in the Family Room.

Literacy Council Seeks Volunteers

Would you like to help an adult learn to read so that he or she can improve their standard of living?  If so, the Literacy Council of St. Mary's County would like to talk to you about our program.  We will train you to tutor the adults who come to us request help.  Fifteen percent (15%) of the adult population in St. Mary's County either cannot read at all or have serious reading problems.  Perhaps you can help.  If interested, call the Literacy Council Office in Leonardtown at (301) 475-9865 or e-mail for more details and the training course schedule. Thank you for your help!
