The Episcopal Church Women of the Church of the Ascension welcome and encourage all women of the parish to become involved in the life of Ascension through community outreach, fundraising, and service to the church. The ECW does not hold regular meetings, but get-togethers are held on an “as-needed” basis to plan for special events. An informal social gathering is held at Kae Clarke’s house on the second Monday of every month at 6:30 for dinner, conversation, and crafts. For more information, please contact the church office at (301) 863-8551. Community Outreach: Annual Coat Drive: Every year in the fall, the ECW coordinates a coat give-away which provides local people in need with a warm coat, free of charge. The Coat Drive started in 2008 and has been a huge success - more than 500 coats and other accessories such as sweaters, scarves, hats and gloves, have been given to the local community. If you have coats to donate and/or would like to be a part of this fundraiser, please contact Kae Clarke. Health Share: This non-profit program seeks to provide health care at a very minimal cost to low income individuals and families who cannot afford medical care. For the past ten years, Ascension’s ECW has catered the annual reception fundraiser, which has raised thousands of dollars to assist local families in need. If you would like to know how you can participate in this important outreach program, please contact Lynn Major. Fundraising: Christmas Cookie Sale: In December, members of the ECW make and sell Christmas cookies, just in time for all the holiday parties! Proceeds from the sale are used to purchase food for the church’s food pantry, as well as refurbishing projects throughout the church. If you would like to make, sell, or buy cookies, please contact Margaret Jarboe. Annual Yard Sale: Every Spring, the ECW sponsors a yard sale in our beautiful gardens. All donated items are received from parishioners and people in the local community. Proceeds from the sale are donated to charity. For information on how you can help, please contact Kae Clarke. Service to the Church and Community: Refurbishing Projects: The ECW has helped to fund, coordinate, and execute many renovation projects at the church. Recently, this includes painting the entire Sunday School wing, completely renovating the offices of the Rector and Secretary, providing new windows, and installing new carpet and flooring in offices and classrooms.
Catering: The ECW caters luncheons and special events for the church, individuals, and outside groups. Members participate by preparing food, serving guests, and clean up at these functions. Profits from these events go to special projects and social needs of this church and community. Please contact Dana Davis for additional information.
